NeuroKintsugi: the Gentle Art of Self-Restoration
Kintsugi or “golden join” is an ancient Japanese art form in which broken pottery is repaired using lacquer mixed with precious metals, typically gold.
This technique originated over 3000 years ago in Japan and was further developed in the 15-16th century.
The story of the object’s damage is not hidden, but intentionally emphasized with golden joints (kintsugi).
In this ancient artistic tradition and philosophy, the object’s brokenness points the way to a new integrated whole, which accepts past losses and accentuates crack lines instead of hiding them. Thus, the object becomes unique and more valued.
Using Kintsugi as a metaphor for healing ourselves, we can understand an important lesson: we can create something unique, more beautiful and resilient. We learn to embrace our so-called imperfections.
Kintsugi art therapy is now well known. It is based on the analogy between repairing an object and repairing its soul. Breakage becomes a sign of renewal, not by concealing, but on the contrary, by highlighting it. The object thus symbolizes the start of a new cycle.
The creator of this unique method, Neuro Kintsugi, is Irene Martynova, a NeuroGraphica instructor from Israel. She combined the principles and elements of NeuroGraphica with the ancient Japanese art.
Our course will include three meetings, during which we will create one drawing, using the NeuroKintsugi method.
*Some familiarity with NeuroGraphica is recommended.
**Suggested materials: a few pages of smooth drawing paper (letter size/A4 or larger), gold markers (2 sizes, thinner and thicker), coloured pencils, regular marker and fine liner, scissors, coloured paper a few small pieces (if you don't have it, DIY by painting white paper), glue.
